Declared in 1983 and a mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site — natural and cultural — since 1990, Río Abiseo protects both an exceptional biodiversity and the archaeological site of Gran Pajatén, a pre-Inca citadel built by the Chachapoya culture and rediscovered only in 1963, entirely swallowed by the forest. The yellow-tailed woolly monkey, endemic to this region, was thought extinct until its surprise rediscovery in 1974, and is now one of the most threatened primates in South America.
