Highlight

One of Peru's largest and least explored national parks, with all but untouched ecosystems

Declared in 2001 after an aerial and ground reconnaissance expedition revealed a range geologically isolated from the Andes proper, with rock formations and ecosystems all but unexplored by science until then. It is one of the largest national parks in Peru and among those retaining the greatest proportion of primary forest untouched by direct human activity, managed in part through an innovative long-term financing mechanism based on carbon credits, which pays for keeping the forest standing.
