Palau National Marine Sanctuary, around 500,000 km²: one of the largest in the world. Palau was the first country to ban shark fishing and bottom trawling throughout its exclusive economic zone
World Heritage Site (Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, inscribed in 2012; 100,200 ha and 445 uninhabited limestone islets)
Scuba diving is banned for a specific reason: below a certain depth the lake has an anoxic layer laden with hydrogen sulphide, and the bubbles could disturb the stratification. The Southern Lagoon holds the highest concentration of marine lakes in the world, and five new subspecies of Mastigias papua have been described from them.
