The Blue Hole at Dwejra is a natural limestone pool, formed when the roof of a sea cave collapsed, connected to the open sea by an arch at about 6 m; beyond it the wall drops below 60 m. The Um El Faroud is a Libyan tanker some 110 m long, deliberately scuttled in 1998 off Wied iz-Zurrieq, which sits upright on sand at around 36 m.

The Um El Faroud was not a shipwreck: it exploded in the Malta dockyards in 1995 and was later scuttled as an artificial reef. A storm broke it in two in 2006, which made the dive more interesting. At the Blue Hole, among the boulders on the bottom, lie the remains of the Azure Window, the natural arch that collapsed during a storm on 8 March 2017.
