Highlight
The best place to hear and watch the indri, the largest living lemur and one of the most vocal primates in the world
Declared in 1989, it is one of the most accessible places in Madagascar to watch lemurs, being relatively close to the capital, Antananarivo. It is the best place in the world to hear the indri, the largest surviving lemur — the still larger lemurs that once lived on the island died out only a few centuries after people arrived — celebrated for its territorial morning song, a long, piercing wail that carries several kilometres and is one of the most recognisable wildlife sounds in Madagascar. Unlike most lemurs, the indri does not survive in captivity, so watching it free in the park is the only way anyone will ever meet the species.
