Amanda Bay

Designated an ASPA in 2005, Amanda Bay protects one of the largest known emperor penguin breeding colonies in East Antarctica, a bird which, unlike the Adélie penguin, breeds through the most extreme depths of the polar winter, incubating its eggs on the sea ice in total darkness and at temperatures that can fall below -60°C, in one of the most extreme breeding strategies documented in any bird on the planet.
