Declared in 1966, Augrabies protects the waterfall where the river Orange, the longest in South Africa, drops 56 metres into a granite gorge with near-vertical walls. The Khoikhoi people, the region's original inhabitants, called it Aukoerebis, which translates roughly as place of great noise, after the roar of the water as it falls, especially audible during the river's seasonal floods.
