Declared in 1961, it was the first national park in Peru, created specifically to protect the caves of Los Guácharos, home to a colony of the oilbird, a strange nocturnal fruit-eating bird that has evolved an echolocation system much like a bat's to find its way in the complete darkness of the caverns where it nests in large, noisy colonies.
