Highlight

Golden sandstone formations that change colour with the sunlight, in the foothills of the Maluti mountains

Declared in 1963, Golden Gate Highlands protects formations of deep golden sandstone whose tone shifts markedly with the angle of the sunlight through the day, in the foothills of the Maluti mountains near the border with Lesotho. The park also holds rock paintings by the ancient San (Bushmen), the first documented inhabitants of the region.
