Declared in 1937, Henri Pittier is the oldest national park in Venezuela, named after the Swiss-Venezuelan naturalist Henri Pittier, who documented its biodiversity exhaustively in the early 20th century and personally drove its legal protection. With more than 580 bird species recorded in a relatively compact area, it holds one of the records for avian biodiversity density in the whole western hemisphere.
