Declared in 1987, Kushiro Shitsugen is Japan's largest wetland and played a decisive part in saving the Japanese red-crowned crane, a subspecies believed extinct in the country from 1924 until a small surviving group was unexpectedly rediscovered in this very wetland in 1926, setting off a winter protection programme with supplementary feeding that has brought the population back to several thousand birds today, and made them a Japanese national symbol of good fortune and long life.
