Declared in 1984, Khaptad protects a remote plateau in Nepal's far west, held sacred by followers of the ascetic and philosopher Khaptad Baba, who lived as a hermit in the area for more than five decades until his death in 1996, drawing pilgrims who still visit his old ashram within the park's boundaries, combining nature conservation and spiritual pilgrimage in one of the least touristically developed corners of Nepal.
