Highlight
The first national park in the Himalayas to protect an area inhabited by Buddhist Tamang communities; devastated by an avalanche in the 2015 earthquake
Declared in 1976, it was the first national park in the Nepalese Himalayas to protect a territory permanently inhabited by local communities, in this case of Tamang ethnicity and Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The Nepal earthquake of 2015 set off a massive rock and ice avalanche that buried the village of Langtang entirely, killing hundreds of its inhabitants and foreign visitors in one of the worst trekking-related tragedies in the country's recent history, after which the community has gradually rebuilt the village and its walking routes.
