Declared in 1959 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1979, it protects part of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and the San Rafael glacier, one of the most accessible glaciers discharging directly into the sea anywhere in the southern hemisphere, reachable by boat from Puerto Chacabuco, where great blocks of ice calve regularly into icebergs that drift across the adjoining lagoon.
