Declared in 2004, Monte León was Argentina's first coastal-marine national park, formed out of a former cattle estancia bought and given to the state by Douglas and Kristine Tompkins, the same philanthropist couple behind the gift of Chile's Patagonia Park. It protects 36 km of Atlantic coast with one of the most accessible Magellanic penguin colonies in Argentine Patagonia.
