Highlight
The Mountains of the Moon that Ptolemy wrote of in the 2nd century; they hold Africa's last equatorial glaciers alongside Kilimanjaro
Declared in 1991 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the Rwenzori are the legendary Mountains of the Moon that the Greek geographer Ptolemy placed in the 2nd century as the source of the Nile, a reference that stayed on European maps for almost two thousand years before 19th-century explorers roughly confirmed it. Alongside Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, they hold one of the last three pockets of equatorial glacier in Africa, now in rapid retreat.
