Declared in 1964 and part of the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Site since 1990, Mount Aspiring owes its nickname of the Matterhorn of New Zealand to the near-perfect pyramid of its main peak (3,033 m), visible from a considerable distance across the Otago region and reckoned one of the technically hardest climbs in the country, steep on all four faces.
