Highlight
Australia's oldest human remains (Mungo Man and Mungo Lady), more than 40,000 years old, were found here
Declared in 1979 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, Mungo holds the site where, in 1968 and 1974, the remains of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were found, estimated at more than 40,000 years old — among the oldest modern human remains ever found outside Africa, and evidence of one of the earliest ritual cremations documented in human history. Its eroded sand formations, known as the Walls of China, lay this geological and human history bare in visible layers.
