Fildes Peninsula

Designated an Antarctic Specially Managed Area (ASMA) in 1996, the Fildes Peninsula holds one of the highest densities of permanent research stations of multiple countries anywhere in Antarctica — Chile, Russia, China, Uruguay and others — in a relatively small area, as well as one of the few paved-runway airports on the whole continent, which makes it a key logistical gateway for scientific and tourist expeditions to the Antarctic peninsula.
