Highlight

The first Biosphere Reserve declared in Cuba, with a pioneering model for reforesting degraded farmland

Declared in 1985, it was the first Cuban Biosphere Reserve recognised by UNESCO. Much of its present territory was, by the middle of the 20th century, farmland degraded by intensive coffee and other cultivation; from the 1960s an ambitious state reforestation programme gradually brought back the original forest cover, making the sierra an internationally cited case study in the ecological restoration of abandoned farmland on a large scale.
