The westernmost tip of Cuba; María la Gorda beach, famous for its legend of a Venetian captive left there by pirates
Made a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1987, Guanahacabibes occupies the westernmost tip of Cuba and combines dry forest, mangroves and coral reefs with the beach of María la Gorda, named after a local legend of a Venetian noblewoman seized by pirates and abandoned there in the 17th century, who is said to have survived by trading with the sailors who passed along the coast.
