Protected since 1937, Topes de Collantes holds within it the former Topes de Collantes Sanatorium, an imposing building raised in the 1930s and 1940s to exploit the cool mountain climate, then reckoned therapeutic for treating tuberculosis; the building, whose construction ran on through Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship, never fully worked as a sanatorium before the Cuban Revolution and was later converted into a hotel.
