Declared in 1976 and joined in 1998 with the neighbouring German Pfälzerwald Nature Park to form the first transboundary Biosphere Reserve in Europe, the Northern Vosges spread across a region that saw heavy fighting in the Franco-Prussian War and both World Wars, with more than 500 medieval and modern castles and fortifications scattered through the forest, witnesses to centuries of territorial dispute between France and the German states.
