Biosphere Reserve

Territories recognised by UNESCO where conserving and inhabiting are tried out together.

What it means

Unlike a classic national park, a biosphere reserve does not set out to separate people from the land but to order how it is used: a protected core, a buffer zone where only compatible activity is allowed, and a transition zone where people live and work. They form a worldwide network created by UNESCO's MAB programme and conceived as a laboratory for coexistence between conservation and human activity. The recognition is international, but the legal protection is supplied by each country.
