Founded in 1914, it is the oldest national park in the Alps and one of the pioneers of continental Europe. Its singularity lies in its management philosophy: from the outset it was established as a strict nature reserve (IUCN category Ia) in which no human intervention is permitted — no felling, no grazing, not even the removal of dead wood — letting ecological processes run unchecked for over a century, which makes it a unique long-term ecology laboratory in Central Europe. It lies in the Engadine valley, in the Grisons.
