Managed since 2008 under a partnership between the Zambian government, the organisation African Parks and six local traditional chieftaincies, the Bangweulu Wetlands are one of the few places in the world where the shoebill — a bird of almost prehistoric appearance much coveted by international birdwatchers for its rarity and its unusually motionless behaviour — can be watched in the wild. They also hold the black lechwe, a semi-aquatic antelope endemic to this basin.
