Prokletije

Prokletije National Park was established in 2009 in eastern Montenegro, next to the borders with Albania and Kosovo, and protects some 166 km². It is the most recent of the country's national parks.

The Prokletije, the Accursed Mountains or Albanian Alps, are the highest and most rugged massif of the Dinarides and the one most like the Alps: sharp ridges, vertical walls, glacial cirques, high-altitude lakes and a highly developed mountain karst with deep shafts. The Montenegrin summit, Zla Kolata, rises above 2,500 metres and is the country's highest point.

Its isolation and the variety of substrates have produced notable botanical endemism, with species found only in the massif, and the whole is regarded as one of the biodiversity hotspots of the Balkans. The wildlife includes Balkan chamois, brown bear, wolf and the Balkan lynx, in a critical state. The park forms an ecological unit with Theth and Valbona National Parks in Albania and with protected areas in Kosovo, and the creation of a cross-border peace park between the three territories has been proposed for years.
