Lovcen

Declared in 1952, Lovćen holds on its summit the mausoleum of the prince-bishop and poet Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, who died in 1851 and is reckoned the most important literary and spiritual figure in Montenegrin history; his epic The Mountain Wreath is studied as a founding text of the country's national identity. The present mausoleum, designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and opened in 1974, crowns the mountain after a climb of 461 steps cut into the rock itself.
