Deep canyons and glaciated Dinaric peaks
Declared in 1952, it protects the limestone massif of Durmitor in northern Montenegro, with the Black Lake as its emblem and the canyon of the River Tara, the deepest in Europe at 1,300 m and often compared to the Grand Canyon. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and is a Biosphere Reserve. Žabljak, the town at its gateway, is the highest-lying town in the Balkans.
