Fun facts

  • It has a labyrinth organ, a chamber of richly veined plates above the gills that lets it breathe air and survive in pools that are almost devoid of oxygen.
  • The male builds a nest of bubbles bound with saliva at the surface, gathers the eggs into it one by one and defends it until the fry hatch.
  • Its pelvic filaments work as organs of touch with which it explores its surroundings and makes contact with other fish.
  • It breathes air with a labyrinth organ, a chamber of richly vascularised bony plates above the gills. That lets it live in almost oxygen-free water — and in fact it drowns if it cannot reach the surface.
  • Its pelvic fins are transformed into two long, mobile filaments with which it feels its surroundings, and which it uses as organs of touch.
  • The male builds a nest of bubbles at the surface, bound together with saliva, and defends the eggs until they hatch.
  • Its tolerance of oxygen-poor water and its hardiness have made it one of the most widespread aquarium fish and an introduced species in several countries.
