Half Moon Caye es el sitio de protección de fauna más antiguo de Belice: se declaró santuario de aves en 1924 para proteger a los piqueros patirrojos, de los que hay una colonia de unos 4.000 ejemplares. En 1981 se convirtió en la primera reserva natural del país bajo la ley de parques nacionales y en la primera área marina protegida de Centroamérica.
