A volcanic archipelago of four groups of islets on the edge of the widest continental shelf in the western Mediterranean, halfway between the Balearics and the Valencian coast. The land above water amounts to just 19 ha, 14 of them on Columbrete Grande, or Illa Grossa. The reserve is aimed particularly at the recovery of the European spiny lobster.

Did you know

La reserva funciona como vivero: el efecto de reserva ('spillover') se nota a muchas millas de distancia. Cuenta con guardapescas jurados, tres embarcaciones, trenes de fondeo fijos —16 en total— para que los barcos no anclen sobre el fondo, y hasta un ROV para vigilancia. Se usa además como centinela científico del cambio global en el Mediterráneo.
