Declared in 2008, Anavilhanas protects the largest river archipelago on the planet, made up of more than 400 islands within the channel of the Rio Negro, one of the Amazon's greatest tributaries by flow. Its dark water, stained by decomposing plant tannins, supports an igapó ecosystem — blackwater flooded forest — distinct from the better-known whitewater flooded forest of the rest of Amazonia.
