Declared in 1969, it is the largest national park in Chile, with over 35,000 km² of ice fields, fiords and channels all but unreachable except by boat or aircraft. It holds Lake O'Higgins — called San Martín on the Argentine side — the deepest lake on the American continent at over 800 metres in places, gouged out by glaciers through successive Patagonian ice ages.
