Cape Shirreff

Protected since 1996 after decades of prior research, Cape Shirreff hosts one of the longest-running long-term ecological monitoring programmes in Antarctica, centred on the Antarctic fur seal since 1965, a species hunted to near-total extinction during the intensive commercial sealing of the 19th century which has recovered markedly over recent decades under international protection.
