Declared in 1979, Calilegua protects a stretch of yungas, the subtropical montane cloud forest that runs from Venezuela to northern Argentina and which reaches here its absolute southern limit, marking the southernmost biogeographic boundary of this kind of ecosystem anywhere in the Americas, with an exceptionally high biodiversity for its relatively temperate latitude.
