Columnas de Lena

Declared in 1995 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, the Lena Pillars are limestone formations over 500 million years old that rise as much as 100 metres above the banks of the River Lena, deep in the heart of Siberia. Their rock strata hold one of the most complete fossil records in the world of the early Cambrian, documenting the so-called Cambrian explosion, the evolutionary episode in which most of the major animal groups alive today first appear in the fossil record, over 500 million years ago.
