Highlight

Granite moorland studded with prehistoric stone circles, with more megalithic monuments than any other region in England

Declared in 1951, Dartmoor holds the greatest concentration of prehistoric monuments in England, with more than 5,000 years of documented human occupation in its stone circles, burial mounds and Bronze Age settlement remains, plainly visible across a wind-scoured granite moor. Its famous semi-wild ponies, which have grazed freely for centuries, belong to one of the oldest pony breeds in the British Isles.
