Peak District

Declared in 1951, it was the United Kingdom's first national park, the direct result of decades of social struggle over the right of access to the countryside: the celebrated mass trespass of Kinder Scout in 1932, in which hundreds of working-class walkers from Manchester and Sheffield deliberately defied the private ownership of aristocratic grouse moors, is reckoned a founding moment of the right-to-roam movement across Britain.
