Declared in 1970 and renamed with its dual Narungga name — Dhilba Guuranda — in 2021 in recognition of the Aboriginal traditional owners of the Yorke Peninsula, it protects a stretch of rugged coast at the peninsula's southern tip, with the remains of an old gypsum mining settlement abandoned in the 1930s once the deposit ran out, kept today as a record of the area's brief industrial history.
