El Rey

Declared in 1948, El Rey takes its name from a former owner of the estate that occupied the land, known locally as el Rey — the King — for his overbearing character, and whose family gave the land to the Argentine state to guarantee its protection in perpetuity after decades of partial cattle and timber working. The park protects a stretch of yungas, the subtropical montane forest of north-western Argentina, with an exceptionally high biodiversity for its small size.
