Declared in 1972, it protects Guadalupe Peak (2,667 m), the highest point in Texas, and the Capitan Reef, one of the finest exposed examples in the world of a Permian fossil coral reef, formed some 260 million years ago when the region lay submerged beneath an ancient tropical sea, long before the dinosaurs appeared.
