Declared in 1978, it is the only national park in the United States dedicated to the memory of a former president and set on the exact spot where he lived: Theodore Roosevelt came to the region in 1883 to hunt bison and ended up establishing two cattle ranches, an experience he himself later acknowledged as decisive in forging his commitment to conservation, which would lead him to create more than 230 million acres of protected land during his presidency.
