Declared in 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, Kahuzi-Biega is the world's principal sanctuary of the eastern lowland gorilla, the largest gorilla subspecies and therefore the largest primate on the planet, with adult males that can top 200 kg. Decades of political instability and the presence of armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have decimated its population, which has fallen by more than 80% since the 1990s, leaving the subspecies critically endangered.
