Declared in 1938, Garamba is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and was the last wild habitat of the northern white rhinoceros, a subspecies that died out in the wild here around 2008 after decades of poaching intensified by regional armed conflict, and which is now down to two females in captivity in Kenya. The park holds the last surviving population of Kordofan giraffe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
