Declared in 1993, Central Karakoram National Park protects four of the fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres that exist on the planet, including K2 (8,611 m), the second highest mountain in the world and reckoned by many climbers technically harder and more dangerous to ascend than Everest itself, with one of the highest death rates among the eight-thousanders.
