Declared in 1994, Nambung holds the Pinnacles Desert, thousands of limestone columns up to 3.5 metres high rising out of yellow sand dunes, formed between 25,000 and 30,000 years ago by the mineralisation of ancient plant roots later exposed by wind erosion, a geological process documented in very few places in the world at this density and scale.
