Desert

Arid country where water rules, with extreme temperatures and scant rainfall.

What it means

A desert is defined not by heat but by the lack of water: there are scorching ones and cold ones, and some of the driest places on the planet are in Antarctica. Its fauna spends its life solving the same problem in a thousand ways — drawing water from food, concentrating urine, spending the day underground, coming out only at night — and much of its activity is compressed into the few days that follow a rain. The life is there; it just rarely coincides with midday.
