Highlight
It holds Australia's deepest lake and the start of the Overland Track, one of the finest treks in the world
Declared in 1922, it forms part of the vast Tasmanian Wilderness complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 for preserving one of the last great stretches of temperate rainforest in the southern hemisphere in an all but unaltered state. Lake St Clair, gouged out by glaciers during the last ice age, is Australia's deepest natural lake at 200 metres. Its flagship walk, the 65 km Overland Track between Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair, is regularly named among the finest multi-day treks in the southern hemisphere, and is managed through a booking system with daily walker limits in the high season, to balance public access against an extremely fragile ecosystem.
