New Forest

Declared in 2005, the New Forest was set aside as a royal hunting ground in 1079 by William the Conqueror, shortly after the Norman conquest of England, making it one of the oldest continuously managed landscapes documented in Europe. Its ponies and cattle graze freely under customary rights — commoning — going back to that same medieval period, and still governing the use of the land today.
